On Monday afternoon at 5:11pm local time, the Dixie State College women’s soccer team learned their first stop on the road to the NCAA Division-II national championship will go through Southern California. The first round opponent for the Red Storm in the West Regional will be the Toros of California State University, Dominguez Hills.
The 5th-seeded Red Storm will kickoff against the 4th-seeded Toros (runner-up in the CCAA Tournament) on Friday, November 13th at 12:00pm Pacific on the campus of Cal State Los Angeles, the region’s top seed. The winner of the first round match will face Cal State L.A. on Sunday, November 15 at noon.
Dixie State makes its first appearance in the D-II tournament after winning the Pacific West Conference with a record of 14-4. Senior forward Mikala Wilkes led the Red Storm with 29 points and 12 goals. The Cedar Hills native was second in the Pac West in goals and led the conference in shots. The Red Storm make the NCAA Tournament for the first time in their second year of eligibility.
Dominguez Hills is one of four teams from the California Collegiate Athletic Associate to earn a selection into the tournament’s West Regional. The Toros (13-8-1) were defeated in their last match 4-0 by Cal State L.A. in the finals of the CCAA Tournament. Jessica Murphy, a sophomore from Torrance, tops nearly every offensive category for CSUDH including goals (10) and shots (98).
The match will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.
