Daniels 20 points lead Red Storm to victory over Mesa State College

ST. GEORGE, UTAH – Freshman forward Deanna Daniels (North Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) scored 20 points leading Dixie State College to a 73-53 non-conference win inside the Burns Arena on Saturday night over Mesa State College. Daniels was 10-14 from the floor and added nine rebounds, one shy of a double-double. Daniels sparked DSC with stellar play off the bench and led all scorers. Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial High School) added 16 points and Tanya Clark (Beaumont. CA/Beaumont) rounded out Red Storm players in double figures with 12 points. Dixie State (4-5) rebounded after losing their last home contest that broke a 13 game home winning streak. In tonight's win the Red Storm shot an amazing 51.7 percent from the floor, 16 percent above their average (35.1), with 48 points coming in the paint and attributing to their success. Mesa State (2-7) shot 40.9 percent in the loss and committed 25 turnovers that resulted in 33 points for Dixie State. Leading from tipoff of to the end of the buzzer, Dixie State opened the game on a 21-5 run, building their lead to 16 points. Mesa State followed with a run of their own, cutting the lead to 6 points with 3:12 left in the first half. DSC was able to build the lead to 12 points on a Deanna Daniels layup with 1:04 left, only to see Jenn Kimbrow hit a jumper to cut the lead at 10 going into the half. The second half saw the Red Storm dominate from the get go, building a lead as many as 26 points. Veronica Siqueiros (Phoenix, AZ/Trevor G Brown) was 4-4 four from the line and added two jumpers to give her 8 points. Brown was 6-8 from the floor and added 5 rebounds, a quiet but stellar performance from her. Meagan Selvidge led the Mavericks with 18 points and 11 rebounds, Courtney McCaig also added 10 points. Dixie State kicks off Pacific West Conference play on Thursday night against BYU-Hawaii. Tipoff from the Burns Arena is set for 5:30pm Mountain time.
