ST. GEORGE, UTAH – Dixie State College dropped two games on Monday to Hawaii Pacific University at Bruce Hurst Field. HPU came from behind to win the early game 5-3 and exploded for 17 hits en route to a 17-7 afternoon triumph.
The Red Storm (11-9, 6-6 PWC) fall four games back of the conference-leading Sea Warriors (15-4, 10-2 PWC) and will not get another crack in official conference play until they play in Oahu in April. HPU takes the four-game PWC series three games to one.
Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) and Drew Oldfield (Aurora, CO/Rangeview) each blasted solo home runs in the third inning of game one. DSC held the lead until the sixth when Quinn Boyer (Ogden, UT/Bonneville HS) lost a Baj Nooij fly ball in left leading to a double. Kale Sumner knocked in Nooij with a single to tie the game 3-3. In the seventh, Blake Amaral’s RBI single scored the go-ahead run and Lester Akeo added an insurance RBI for the 5-3 final.
Payton Rentmeister (Riverton, UT/Riverton) allowed two runs in relief for the loss (1-1). Starter Preston Grimes (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) received a no-decision after 5.2 innings of three run (two earned), six hit baseball. Yack and Tony Nelson (St. George. UT/Dixie) were the only Red Storm players notching multi-hit efforts.
In the later game, DSC took a 3-2 advantage into the third after a two-run Oldfield blast and a Yack RBI double. HPU responded with five runs in the third and seventh innings to cruise to the series-clinching win.
Alex Hesterly squandered seven runs on five hits in 2.1 innings in his third start (L, 1-1). Offensively, Boyer added three hits and two runs. Brett Adams (Sandy. UT/Alta HS) notched a pair of safeties including a solo homer in the seventh. Chas Brunke (Glendale, AZ/Cactus) swatted two hits from the nine spot in his first start of the season.
Dixie State battles Hawaii Pacific in a non-conference tilt on Tuesday afternoon beginning at 1:00pm.
