ST. GEORGE, Utah - Eight conference match-ups are sandwiched in between two non-conference battles in the 2010 Dixie State College football schedule released officially Thursday by the DSC Sports Information Office. The 10-game slate features a rematch against geographic rival Southern Utah University and two Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) games against newcomer Simon Fraser University.
DSC is scheduled to kickoff on August 28 at Adams State. Last season, the Red Storm beat the Grizzlies 37-28 in St. George.
The home opener at Hansen Stadium is Sept. 4 against defending GNAC champ Central Washington. The Wildcats swept both meetings with DSC last year (37-6 in Ellensburg, 23-9 in St. George) and lost in the D-II quarterfinals to eventual national-champion Northwest Missouri State.
Dixie State remains at home on Sept. 11 facing Humboldt State. The California school lost to the Red Storm 24-20 at Hansen but earned redemption in Arcata 33-22. The win was HSU’s first triumph in their last 18 games against GNAC competition.
DSC closes out competition in September with its second game against Central Washington on the 18th in Ellensburg.
After a bye week, Dixie State heads north of the border to Burnaby, British Columbia for the first ever meeting with the Clan of Simon Fraser. SFU joins the GNAC after a 3-4-1 record last year against Canadian competition.
On October 9, Dixie State hosts Western Oregon during Homecoming. The Storm beat the Wolves at home 31-23 last year after losing a heartbreaker in Monmouth 17-16.
The final three games of October close out the GNAC schedule. DSC visits Humboldt State at the Redwood Bowl on Oct. 16. The Storm closes out the home schedule hosting Simon Fraser on Oct. 23 on Senior Day. On Oct. 30, Dixie State will try and win for the first time at Western Oregon.
The regular-season finale continues the geographic rivalry with the T-Birds of Southern Utah University on November 6. Dixie State dropped a 36-7 decision last year at the Eccles Coliseum in the first game between the two schools since 1963. The game will once again be played in Cedar City.
“It is exciting to continue the tradition of playing SUU while facing the challenges of a tough GNAC schedule,” said first-year head coach Scott Brumfield.
He added, “Playing in Canada against Simon Fraser will be a new experience and an intriguing step for our program.”
