PALM DESERT — No. 5 Chico State shot a 285 (3-under par) to take over first place with a 577 two-round total at the 2010 NCAA Men’s Golf West/Central Super Regional. The Wildcats were just one shot back coming into the round and now lead by three strokes over second place and No. 20-ranked Sonoma State.
Dixie State is tied for 8th place (295+306=601) and was led by a stellar individual performance from Cameron Crawford. Crawford is tied for 11th overall and led the Red Storm with a 74 (+2) performance today. Chad Crowther (76) and Taylor Reardon (75) are tied for 54th at +9 for the tournament. Conner Jones (81) is tied for 68th and Kyle Chappell (84) is tied for 78th.
Sonoma State shot matched Chico’s 285 to move into second with a two-round total of 579 . The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champion, Western New Mexico held a four shot lead late in the second round and were 2-under par at one point, but finished with a 289 (1-over par) for a 582 two-round total. No. 21 and California Collegiate Athletic Association Champion Cal State Monterey Bay is in fourth with a 592. No. 10 Cal State Stanislaus, No. 22 Colorado-Colorado Springs and No. 16 Western Washington, that lead after round one, are all tied for fifth at 594 (18-over par).
Only the top five teams, and the top two individuals whose team did not qualify, advance to the national tournament.
Chico State got a huge push from co-leader Brandon Harkins and third-place Kyle Souza who both shot a 3-under par 69, tying the tournament low. Harkins had five birdies on the day, four on the front nine alone. Western New Mexico’s Gordon Webb is tied with Harkins after shooting a 1-under par 71, following up a first-round 69 on day one. Webb had three birdies with a 34 on the front nine, but had two bogeys and just one birdie on the back. Sonoma State’s Ryan Carter is in fourth after he birdied the last two holes to shoot a 69.
